Pepperstone Pro Account Review - Requirements, Leverage & Conditions

Pepperstone is a globally recognised multi-asset broker known for its competitive pricing, fast execution, and a wide range of trading platforms. It handles billions in monthly trading volume and caters to a wide range of traders with diverse instruments, platforms, and account options.

While the broker offers standard accounts like the Razor and Standard accounts for retail traders, it also provides a professional account option for high-volume traders. This Pepperstone Pro status comes with a number of benefits, but also means giving up some of the protections afforded to retail clients.

In this Pepperstone Pro Account review, we’ll explore what the account is, its requirements, leverage and trading conditions, and how traders can get one.

What is a Pepperstone Pro Account?

The Pepperstone Pro Account, also known as Professional Client status, is not a single account but a category of premium trading conditions offered on the broker's two main account types. It allows traders to access superior trading conditions without changing the core account type.

Unlike retail clients, who are subject to leverage restrictions, professional clients can access higher leverage alongside other benefits. By becoming a Professional Client, you are considered to have a greater understanding of the risks involved in leveraged trading.

Benefits of Becoming a Pepperstone Pro

Upgrading to a professional client status with Pepperstone provides several key advantages for high-volume traders:

  • Higher Leverage - The most significant benefit is access to higher leverage. While retail clients in many jurisdictions have lower leverage levels, professional traders can access leverage of up to 1:500. This allows for greater capital efficiency and the ability to control larger positions.
  • Active Trader Program - Pepperstone Professional clients qualify for Pepperstone's Active Trader Program. This program offers tiered discounts on commissions or spreads, with rebates paid daily, which can significantly reduce trading costs.
  • Advanced Tools and VPS Access - Pepperstone Pros gain access to advanced trading tools, analytics, and a VPS connection for enhanced order execution.
  • Relationship Manager - Professional Clients on Pepperstone will be provided with a dedicated Relationship Manager to look after all of their trading needs.
  • Exclusive Benefits - Pepperstone Pros also receive a range of premium perks, including exclusive invitations to VIP premium Forex events, seminars and workshops, private dining experiences and sporting events.

Requirements and Eligibility

Pepperstone's requirements for becoming a Professional Client are based on a self-certification process. The self-certification process only takes a few minutes and is available in the My Account section. You’ll have to complete a short quiz to demonstrate that you meet the eligibility criteria. You'll need to self-certify that you meet two of the following three criteria:

  • Your experience in trading leveraged trading (financial derivative or OTC) products.
  • Your cash deposits and trading portfolio exceed $500,000.
  • Your professional experience working in the financial services sector.

How to Get a Pepperstone Pro Account

Upgrading to a Professional Client status is a straightforward process, but you must first have a live retail trading account with Pepperstone. Log in to your secure client area on the Pepperstone website and click on your profile. Locate the My Account option and click on it. Look for an option to upgrade to Pro in your account dashboard.

You will be prompted to complete a short quiz and self-certify that you meet at least two of the eligibility criteria mentioned above. Pepperstone's team will review your application. Once approved, your account will be designated with Professional Client status, and you will gain access to the associated benefits and conditions.

Leverage on Pepperstone Pro Account

One of the biggest advantages of the Pro Account is the increased leverage. While retail clients in many regulated jurisdictions are limited to leverage of 1:30 on major forex pairs, a professional client can access much higher leverage, often up to 1:500. This increased leverage allows traders to control larger positions with a smaller amount of capital.

However, it is important to remember that leverage is a double-edged sword. While it amplifies potential profits, it also amplifies the risks of trading. As an example, here is a look at the leverage levels available on the Pepperstone Pro account per asset class compared to retail accounts in the UK and the EEA (in other jurisdictions, the levels will differ, especially for retail clients):

The Conditions for Pepperstone Pro Accounts

It is important to note that even after receiving the pro status, trading conditions, account features and functionality remain the same. Pepperstone offers two main account types with different pricing structures to suit different trading styles. The Standard account features spreads from as low as 1.0 pips for major currency pairs with no commissions charged. In contrast, the Razor account offers low spreads from 0.0 pips plus a commission depending on the trading platform used.

Pepperstone Razor (Raw Account) Features

For MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 users, commissions sit at $3.50, €2.60, £2.25, or CHF 3.30 per side per lot, depending on the chosen account currency. The same $3.50 per side per lot applies to TradingView and Pepperstone Trading Platform users. cTrader users pay a lower commission of $3.00 per side per lot.

For TradingView, cTrader, and the Pepperstone Trading Platform accounts with base currencies other than USD, the commission is converted to the account currency at the spot rate.

What will change

Please note that not everything will stay the same. Upgrading to a Pepperstone Pro Account comes with significant trade-offs, primarily related to the loss of retail client protections. These include:

Loss of Negative Balance Protection (NBP)

Retail clients are guaranteed negative balance protection, meaning their losses cannot exceed their total account balance. A trader's account cannot go into a negative balance. Professional clients, however, lose this key protection. They are not guaranteed negative balance protection. However, they may be eligible for a once-off negative balance protection of up to $100,000.

Reduced Regulatory Disclosure and Risk Warnings

Professional clients are assumed to have a high level of market knowledge and experience. Consequently, they will no longer receive the same level of risk warnings and disclosures that are provided to retail clients.

Margin Close-Out at 20%

A professional trader is expected to manage their own risk and is responsible for monitoring their margin levels. As such, the margin close-out level will be set at 20% for MetaTrader 4 and 5, compared to 50% for retail clients on MT4/5. However, the margin close-out will remain at 50% for cTrader accounts, even for professional clients.

Pepperstone’s Credibility

While assessing whether the professional status is right for your trading needs, it is important to explore the overall credibility of Pepperstone. Fortunately, Pepperstone is a well-regarded broker with regulations in a variety of jurisdictions. The broker is under the regulation of the FCA in the UK, the CySEC in Cyprus, the ASIC in Australia, the BaFin in Germany, the CMA in Kenya, and the DFSA in Dubai, among others.

Additionally, Pepperstone enjoys a positive reputation among users. The broker has a solid 4.5 out of 5-star rating on Trustpilot, based on more than 3,100 reviews. This further reinforces the credibility of this broker and makes it a more appealing option for professional traders.

Closing Remarks

The Pepperstone Pro Account offers a compelling suite of advantages for high-volume, experienced traders. The primary benefits include significantly higher leverage of up to 1:500, access to the cost-saving Active Trader Program, and exclusive perks like a dedicated relationship manager. They are designed to enhance capital efficiency and provide a premium trading experience.

However, this upgrade is not a decision to be taken lightly as it involves a fundamental trade-off. For starters, the high leverage levels provided significantly amplify the potential losses alongside the potential profits. Additionally, the loss of key retail investor protections, most notably the guarantee of negative balance protection, is an important consideration. This means traders could potentially lose more than their initial deposit.

Ultimately, the Pepperstone Pro Account is an excellent option for seasoned traders who fully understand the markets and are confident in their risk management strategies. Before applying, it is important to carefully weigh the potential benefits against the significant increase in personal responsibility and risk.
